Some Claude users recently noticed something unusual: Claude Code was missing from the feature list of the $20/month Pro plan on Anthropic’s pricing page.
The change appeared around April 21, 2026, when the company’s pricing table showed an “X” beside Claude Code under the Pro tier. Instead, the coding tool was only listed as available under the higher-priced Max subscription plans, which start at roughly $100 per month.
Naturally, the discovery triggered confusion and frustration among developers who rely on Claude Code for programming tasks.
Not Everyone Was Affected
The situation turned out to be more complicated than it first appeared.
Anthropic later explained that the change was part of a limited experiment affecting a very small percentage of new users. Existing Pro subscribers continued to have access to Claude Code and were not impacted by the test.
According to the company, the test involved roughly 2% of new sign-ups, meaning most users would never notice the difference.
Why Anthropic Might Be Testing This
Although Anthropic didn’t give a detailed explanation for the experiment, industry observers believe the test reflects a growing challenge faced by AI companies: the cost of running powerful AI tools is extremely high.
Tools like Claude Code can perform complex programming tasks, run long reasoning chains, and interact with external tools—activities that require large amounts of computing power. As usage increases, flat-rate subscription pricing becomes harder to sustain.
Some analysts say the change could signal a shift toward more tiered pricing models, where advanced features are reserved for higher-priced plans.
Developer Reaction
The temporary removal of Claude Code from the Pro plan caused a noticeable reaction across social media and developer forums. Many users worried they might soon lose access to the coding assistant unless they upgraded to a much more expensive plan.
Anthropic moved quickly to clarify the situation, emphasizing that the pricing page change was only part of a small test rather than a permanent policy change.
A Sign of Future AI Pricing Changes?
Even though the test affected only a small number of new customers, it highlights a broader trend in the AI industry.
Companies building advanced AI tools are struggling to balance demand, infrastructure costs, and sustainable pricing models. As these tools become more powerful—and more widely used—subscription plans may continue to evolve.
